Holiday Magic
This December, we have a once-a-year superpower: the chance to wrap our child in the richest, most beautiful tapestry of light the world has ever known.
Imagine your child growing up with one of these four sacred stories lighting up their heart every single year:
The Christmas manger: Jesus was born into the world as a tiny baby so we may believe and have eternal life.
The Hanukkah menorah: One day’s oil burned eight because courage and faith make miracles. A symbol for each of us to shine our light into the world.
The Kwanzaa kinara: Seven principles (unity, purpose, creativity…) show us how to build strong, joyful lives together.
Bodhi Day’s glowing lantern: Prince Siddhartha sat under a tree until he understood how to end suffering with wisdom and kindness.
Four different cultures. Four different lights. One unstoppable message: Love prevails.
When we choose even one (or all!) of these meaning-centered traditions, we are giving children:
A yearly flood of awe, gratitude, and belonging that research shows raises lifelong happiness by 30–40 %.
Emotional super-glue: one candle flicker or scent of gingerbread decades from now will still make them feel safe and loved.
An early, rock-solid sense of purpose: “I’m part of something so much bigger than me.”
Protection against the post-holiday crash and the “gimme” culture.
We don’t need to do everything perfectly. We only need to do one thing intentionally.
We can pick the light that makes our heart leap and start there:
Light the Advent wreath and whisper, “Jesus is coming.”
Spin the dreidel and cheer the eight-day miracle.
Light the kinara and name one Kwanzaa principle each night.
Decorate a tiny Bodhi tree (or any plant) with paper hearts of kindness on December 8.
Children won’t remember every gift. They will remember the glow of the candles, the taste of holiday food, the sound of our voice telling the ancient, hope-filled stories.
This is our invitation to give them a December that feels like magic… because it is.
Light the first candle—whatever color it is. Tell the first story—whichever one sings to your family. Begin the tradition that will still warm their heart when they’re parents themselves.
We’ve got everything we need: love, light, and little ones ready to believe in all the goodness on offer.
With love, joy, peace, and every kind of light for your beautiful family,
Jennifer
